Andres is from Bogotá, Colombia, where he obtained both his bachelor's and master's degrees in Civil Engineering from Universidad de Los Andes. He also obtained his bachelor's degree in Architecture from the same institution. At the university, he served as teaching assistant for two years and as a full-time Lecturer for three years. He also worked as a Research Assistant and Professional Engineer at the Material and Civil Works Research Center (CIMOC). Currently, he is pursuing a Ph.D. in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Rice University. His research is primarily focused on multi-hazard analysis and risk and resilience assessment of buildings and infrastructure components.
